Write down what you already have
Identify the exact base game, platform and edition attached to your account. A similarly named launcher entry can be a trial, subscription entitlement or different-generation version rather than the product an upgrade requires. Check the store's ownership information and publisher notes before buying an add-on that assumes a particular base game.
If you own a disc, check whether the upgrade continues to require that disc and a compatible drive. If access comes through a subscription, find out what happens to an add-on when that access ends. Owning downloadable content is not always the same as owning the base game needed to use it.
Compare contents line by line
Make three short columns: the base edition, the larger edition and any standalone upgrade. List campaign expansions separately from cosmetics, soundtrack files, digital art and temporary bonuses. Names such as deluxe or ultimate are branding, not a standard definition of what must be included.
Check whether an expansion pass covers released content, planned content or only a named set of packs. It may not include every future expansion. Also distinguish early access to a release from a game sold through an ongoing Early Access development programme; similar words can refer to different arrangements.
Read how extras are delivered. Some appear inside the game, while soundtracks or art files may be accessed separately. A physical package can contain a one-use code for extras, which matters when buying second-hand. Do not count an already redeemed code as part of the usable contents.
Price the parts you actually want
Compare the total cost of the base game plus the specific extras you would buy against the larger edition. Use current prices from the store you intend to use, including any account-specific bundle treatment. Avoid assigning value to items you would never choose separately merely because a comparison chart gives them a large notional price.
Confirm the final product name, region and platform at checkout. If the listing remains unclear about a required base game or included expansion, use the publisher's support information before purchasing. The useful outcome is a clear list of playable content and extras you will gain, with no duplicate base-game purchase hidden inside the edition name.
